Position Purpose

Oversees the written and graphic content of various University of Ottawa publications, particularly the Gazette and Tabaret magazines, both of which are online news magazines that target specific audiences. Major tasks include managing article publication from conception through to product delivery, writing articles and taking photos when needed. Seeks and investigates slideshow stories, contacts subjects and co-coordinates the writing, proofreading and translation of profiles.

Essential Qualifications

Knowledge of journalism, communications or public relations normally acquired through post-secondary studies or equivalent work experience
Five years’ experience in journalism and/or communications and/or public relations writing and editing
Minimum of three years’ experience in project management, namely in performing work breakdown studies, scheduling tasks, managing teams of professionals, such as freelance and staff writers, editors, photographers, translators and clerical staff.
Experience in coordinating a variety of tasks involving complex information under pressure of deadlines
Experience in a post-secondary or public-sector environment

Other required competencies
Strong organizational, planning and analytical skills; excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, and to interact with creative professionals in a positive manner under conditions of high stress and changing priorities in a fast-paced environment
Sound judgment, initiative, creativity, flexibility, tact and diplomacy, as well as experience in dealing with conflict situations and sensitive issues that reflect on corporate image
Proficiency in word processing and knowledge of desktop publishing, HTML editing software (e.g. Homesite, Frontpage) and image editing software (e.g. Paint Shop Pro)
Bilingualism, with emphasis on excellence in either English or French
Availability to occasionally work evenings and weekends

Note

Contract of approximately 6 months, with possibility of renewal. Eligibility to benefits and union affiliation will be determined upon hiring.
